A frenectomy is a simple and safe procedure used to release a tight frenum.

Lingual frenectomy involves the lingual frenum under the tongue (for tongue-tie or ankyloglossia).
Labial frenectomy involves the labial frenum between the upper lip and gums (sometimes causes a gap between the front teeth).

Why Are Frenectomies Done in Kids and Adults?

While frenectomies are often performed in infants and young children, adolescents and adults may need one for several reasons:

Lingual Frenectomy (Tongue-Tie)

Difficulty with speech articulation
Tongue mobility problems
Oral hygiene issues (can’t sweep food from teeth)
Discomfort during eating
Limitations in orthodontic or myofunctional therapy
Head, neck, or jaw tension
Sleep apnea symptoms

Labial Frenectomy

A large frenum causing a gap between the front teeth that interferes with orthodontic Treatment
Receding gums or periodontal stress from frenum pulling on gum tissue
Pain or difficulty with dentures
Lip restriction that causes discomfort or poor oral seal

How It’s Done

Our office uses a Lightscalpal CO2 laser to remove the restricted frenum. Stitches are typically placed for patients that can tolerate them in ages five and older. This aides in the healing process and minimizes the risk of scaring and reattachment.
